If you look a few blog entries down, you will see that Alex has been busy re-bedding a hatch on the port side of Panacea. It's just one of the many projects that are good to get connected with while we are in September here in Fort Myers Beach.
This is the slowest time of the month and projects happen. I've asked Alex to shoot some photos of the stuff he's doing so you can, if you need to, pick up some tips that you may want to log into the brain files for future projects on your own boat.
One of my jobs is to keep the water on the outside of the boat, so this hatch has been leaking and it was time to fix it or get more buckets and towels.
Remember: You can click on a photo and it will open up another window to enlarge it.
The first photo shows the run off that was protected by a piece of tape. We wanted the goop to come out so it made a good seal. Alex let it dry for a couple of days and then cut and peeled it off to make a good line.
As you can see the leak has probably been going on for years so he cleaned the wood and sanded it out. The wood is good, but will show some signs of water damage from the length of time it has been leaking.
I'm sure that I could just paint it white, but I want to get some varnish on it and see what it looks like. I can always paint, but having a few scars isn't going to hurt her much, it just gives her another story to tell. That happens to us all as we age and the stories are what makes us who and what we are. So let's make her healthy and continue sailing her. Panacea is an amazing sailing vessel.
Meanwhile, the outer teak around the hatch is in great shape and looks beautiful, as always, with her new coat of varnish. Alex is waiting a couple of days to apply another coat. We'll be working it up to 6 to 8 coats.
The same will be done with the inside trim. I think it will be OK. Well see how it all turns out as we go.
The first coat looks pretty good so Alex will put another one on and we'll take it from there. At least the wood is all protected and the leak has been stopped. That's pretty important to me.
Since Alex has that can of varnish out, may as well do the starboard hatch and the front hatch too. He should have that done in a few days and then it's time to wax the upper decks and make her look even prettier than she is today.
I'm getting pretty excited about getting down home. Pat and I should be pulling into Fort Myers Beach on about the 6th or 7th of October. I'll get down to Panacea and change the oil, clean the strainers do some adjusting of things and if the winds are looking good, take a couple of days to go sailing before I go to Orlando. I've booked a big gig in Orlando that take up the 12th through the 14th. It's a private function, but a big one, so that will take up a little time.
Big wedding on the 16th so it will be nice to have Panacea in shape again.
So give me a call. I'm ready to go sailing in Fort Myers Beach and show you my neck of the sea. It's pretty amazing out there and I really want to sail with you.
It's pretty simple, drop me a line at the address below or give me a call at one of the two numbers listed below and well talk. That's where it starts.
